What a 16x16 sudoku is

A 16x16 sudoku is a standard sudoku scaled up: 16 symbols, 16 rows, 16 columns, and 16 square boxes measuring 4 cells by 4 cells. Because 16 factors as 4 × 4, the boxes are perfect squares, exactly like the 3x3 boxes on a classic grid. That's a genuine convenience — the geometry is symmetric, so row logic and column logic behave identically.

That squareness is also why 16 is the standard large format rather than 12x12 or 20x20. On a 12x12 board the boxes are 4x3 rectangles, so row logic and column logic behave differently and the puzzle feels lopsided. Sixteen is the next size up from nine that keeps the board square.

The three constraints:

  1. Rows. Each of the 16 horizontal lines holds all 16 symbols, once each.
  2. Columns. Each of the 16 vertical lines holds all 16 symbols, once each.
  3. Boxes. Each of the 16 heavily outlined 4x4 blocks holds all 16 symbols, once each.

The names, and what they don't guarantee

Other names you'll see for this size: hexadoku, mega sudoku, monster sudoku, and super sudoku. They all usually describe the same 16x16 board, though "mega" and "monster" are used loosely enough that they occasionally mean 12x12 or 25x25 instead.

Super sudoku is the one to be careful with, because it's a marketing term rather than a technical one and it has drifted into three different meanings. Most of the time it means this board. Occasionally it's attached to a 9x9 grid with four extra shaded 3x3 regions — a hyper or windoku puzzle, which is the same size as a classic grid with extra constraints, not a bigger grid at all. And some puzzle books use "super" simply to mean a standard grid printed at a large cell size, which changes nothing about the puzzle. If you're downloading or buying a set, check the stated dimensions rather than trusting the name.

The symbol sets, and why they matter

Publishers use four different symbol conventions for 16x16, and mixing them up mid-solve is the single most common beginner error. All four are legitimate. None is more "correct" than the others.

The trap is subtle. Note that 1 through 9 plus A through F is only fifteen symbols, not sixteen — you need either a zero at the front or a G at the back. If a grid uses 1–9 and A–F and nothing else, either it's actually 15x15 (which is possible, with 3x5 boxes) or the puzzle has a typo. Count the symbol legend before your first move.

The 1-to-16 convention has one practical drawback: two-digit numbers need wider cells, and a printed 16x16 with numbers up to 16 is either cramped or enormous. The hexadecimal set fits one character per cell, which is why nearly every site where you play 16x16 sudoku online defaults to it. The A-to-P set solves the same width problem and has one extra advantage in print: nobody is tempted to do arithmetic with letters.

The real cost of four conventions shows up when you switch sources. A puzzle printed in letters and an answer key printed in hexadecimal describe the same grid, but checking one against the other means converting in your head, and the conversion is easiest to get wrong right at the boundary between 9 and A. Paper 16x16 is still worth doing occasionally. It builds a discipline that screens let you skip. How solving changes at 16x16

Every 9x9 technique still works, but their relative value flips: crosshatching gets weaker and candidate-based techniques get stronger. Understanding why saves you from grinding away at the wrong approach.

Here's the underlying reason. On a 9x9, each cell has 20 peers out of 80 other cells — 25% of the board. Every symbol you place removes an option from a quarter of everything. On a 16x16, each cell has 39 peers out of 255 — just 15%. A placement constrains proportionally less of the board, so the cascading collapse that finishes a 9x9 doesn't happen the same way.

Crosshatching is slower but not useless

Crosshatching a single symbol across all 16 boxes takes real time and often yields nothing early on. With 16 cells per box and only a handful of givens, most boxes leave four or five legal homes for any given symbol on the first pass.

Do it anyway, but do it efficiently: pick the symbol that appears most often among the givens and crosshatch that one first. On a 16x16 there's usually a symbol with ten or eleven placements already on the board, and it will resolve several more immediately. Then move to the next-most-common. Working most-frequent-first can produce a dozen placements before you touch pencil marks.

Subsets grow, and so does their payoff

Naked and hidden subsets are the workhorses of a 16x16 solve, and they run all the way up to size eight. In a unit of 16 cells, a naked pair, triple, quad, quintuple, sextuple, septuple, or octuple is possible — and each has a complementary hidden subset of the opposite size.

That symmetry is useful: in a 16-cell unit, a naked quad and a hidden set of twelve describe the same fact. Practically, you'll find naked pairs and triples most often, and hidden pairs are worth actively hunting because they're invisible without complete pencil marks.

The important shift is that on a 9x9 you can often finish without ever writing a candidate. On a 16x16 you almost never can.

Pointing pairs and box-line reduction scale cleanly

Locked candidates work identically at any grid size, and the wider 4x4 boxes make them more common. If a symbol within one box is confined to a single row, eliminate it from the rest of that row — now 12 cells instead of 6. If a symbol in a row can only sit inside one box, eliminate it from the other 12 cells of that box.

Those are the highest-value eliminations on a big grid, because each one clears so many cells at once. Look for them every time a candidate pass finishes.

Chains and fish scale, with a caveat

X-Wing, Swordfish, and XY-Wing all work on a 16x16, but they're far harder to see. An X-Wing on a 9x9 means checking 9 rows for a symbol appearing exactly twice; on a 16x16 it means checking 16 rows across 16 symbols — 256 scans instead of 81. They're also needed less often than the size suggests. On a typical generated 16x16 there is so much unexploited information sitting in the locked candidates and the subsets that an exotic pattern rarely becomes the only available move. If you think you need a Swordfish, you have almost certainly missed a box-line reduction.

Solving your first one, in order

The order of operations that works on a first 16x16 is not the order that works on a 9x9, and the difference is when you start marking candidates.

  1. Crosshatch every symbol, most-frequent first. All sixteen, no candidate marks yet. Start with the symbol that already has the most placements and work down. This alone typically places a substantial fraction of the grid and asks nothing but patience.
  2. Repeat the whole sweep. Every placement from the first pass creates new constraints, so a second complete sweep almost always yields more. Keep sweeping until a full pass produces nothing at all.
  3. Now mark candidates — but only in the fullest box. Find the box with the most placed symbols and mark just that one. It has the shortest candidate lists and the best odds of a naked single.
  4. Work outward from resolved regions. Solved areas constrain their neighbors, so expand from strength rather than attacking the emptiest corner of the board.
  5. Hunt locked candidates before anything advanced. Within each box, look for a symbol whose remaining candidates all sit in one row or column, then clear it from the rest of that line. These are the cheapest big eliminations on the board.

The mistake nearly everyone makes on their first one is step three done wrong: marking all 256 cells at the outset. It takes half an hour, produces an unreadable grid, and most of those marks get eliminated within minutes of you starting to think.

Worked that way, a generated 16x16 is easier than a hard 9x9 by technique required and harder by everything else: concentration has to hold for an hour or more, and a single stale mark can cost you the grid. It's a different kind of challenge, not a higher rung on the same ladder.

The grid-count figures are worth a moment. There are more valid 16x16 sudoku solutions than there are atoms in the observable universe by a wide margin, which is a fun fact and also a practical one: you will never see the same 16x16 twice.

Note the givens row. A 16x16 hands you far more starting symbols in absolute terms, but as a share of the board it's similar — around 40% either way. There is no proven minimum clue count for 16x16 the way 17 is proven for 9x9; the problem is far harder to settle computationally and remains open.

Building your own 16x16

Constructing one large grid is worth doing once, even if you never do it twice, because it shows you exactly why clue count is not the same thing as difficulty.

The method runs backward from what most people expect. You don't start by placing clues. You start by producing a complete, valid solution grid — all 256 cells filled, every row, column and box constraint satisfied. Then you remove symbols one at a time, and after each removal you check that the puzzle still has exactly one solution. The moment a removal admits a second valid completion, you put the symbol back and try a different cell.

That uniqueness check is the entire difficulty of construction, and it's why building a 16x16 by hand is impractical. On a 9x9 you can often reason about ambiguity directly. On a 16x16 there are far too many cells and far too many interacting units to verify by eye, so the check has to be run by a solver program that either returns one solution or reports more.

Two things become obvious the first time you try it.

Clue count is a weak proxy for difficulty. Two grids with the same number of givens can be wildly different to solve, because what matters is which deductions the clue positions force and in what order. A generous clue count clustered in three boxes leaves the rest of the board starved.

Symmetry works against you. Insisting that the clue pattern be rotationally symmetric, as the publishing convention does, removes some of your freedom to place clues where the solving path actually needs them. It's a purely visual constraint, and on a board this size it's a genuinely restrictive one.
